Scrapbook Page for Napoleon (Nip) Bonaparte CHISHOLM

1920 Census

Laura and Napoleon are living at home with no children when 1920 Census was taken.

Nip's Childhood Cigar Box Fiddle

Since Young Nip couldn’t remember to use his fourth finger, his father refused to allow him to play his violin. So Nip made a cigar-box violin to practice on. When he had mastered the use of his fourth finger, he was allowed to play the full size violin again.

Nip Called Square Dances

He couldn’t read a note, but played everything by ear. While playing his fiddle, he called the dance. He could play the Gaelic Highland tunes of his ancestors. But he loved to play the old masters too such as Chopin, Hyden and Beethoven.

Originally they had a log cabin.

They started in a log cabin. Then built a brick house. But fire took their new home. Only the old log cabin was spared. The family took refuge in the old log cabin. Lloyd said if the cat acted up, his Dad (Nip) would just throw the cat out through the holes between the logs.

Study by the firesplace

Perseverance helped them study by the dim fireplace light. The children slept on straw packed mattresses in the loft just up the ladder. Music brought the family into harmony.
